I’m Joe Peterson, and I’m exploring war, the economy, and my identity.

In tandem with beginning my first full time job, I became entranced by how one is expected to “climb the ladder” to success – a western ladder built on bloodshed, pillaging, death, and greed. Our circadian rhythms, how we love, and who we are is so shaped by capital, war, and our relationship to each. My favorite section of this work is the broken mirror in the middle inviting you to reflect upon your seat in the chaos. It is a very personal piece – originally created on the back of my dresser and using my personal checks as a canvas. My collage showcases my upbringing as a military kid, reflections on what we need and how we get it, and a significant amount of cash.

Mixed Media mounted on fiberboard. 12″ x 39″ (2019)

In 2025, this work was included in “The Simulated Real” at Mr. Kills in Brooklyn.
